Premiere screenings set for
ARC OF LIGHT: A Portrait of Anna Campbell Bliss
in Washington, D.C. and Salt Lake City

The Utah Museum of Contemporary Art in Salt Lake City, in conjunction with the Utah Film Center, will premiere ARC OF LIGHT: A Portrait of Anna Campbell Bliss on Friday, March 9,2012 at 7p.m.A Q&A with the artist will follow the screening. The film will also receive a Washington, D.C. premiere at the National Museum of Women in the Arts as part of the Environmental Film Festival on Monday, March 19,2012 at 7p.m.

ARC OF LIGHT: A Portrait of Anna Campbell Bliss is a documentary film about a pioneering artist, architect and designer who has devoted her life to the creation of works of art that explore the complex intersections between art, technology, science, nature, poetry, mathematics and architecture. The film looks at the astonishing range of Bliss’s work, from small painterly and digitally based studies of color and light to architectural site commissions of immense scale. It also puts her work in art-historical context and traces her Modernist influences, including the Bauhaus artists of the1920s. At age 86, Bliss continues to take on large-scale site commissions and create new works of art in her Salt Lake City studio.

Anna Campbell Bliss is a true pioneer in American Modernism. One of the first women ever trained as an architect at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, she has forged her own vision in art and architecture. Bliss has tapped historically important movements in art, architecture and design for inspiration yet anticipated the future by incorporating computer-generated imagery into her work. The film includes compelling interviews with the artist’s husband, architect and furniture designer Robert Bliss; filmmaker Judy Hallet; and professor of architecture Stanley Hallet.

The Utah Museum of Contemporary Art is located at 20S.Temple,Salt Lake City, Utah.

I want to share a video of last Wednesday’s dress rehearsal in prepartion for this Sunday’s concert at 3pm. I will be conducting the Queer Urban Orchestra in the New York premiere of my Jubilation! Dance for Orchestra. This is also my orchestral conducting debut. The concert will be at the Church of the Holy Apostles on 9th Avenue and 28th Street.

I hope to see you there. We’ll be converging at a Triple Crown on 7th and 28th for a few drinks afterward.

New York City Premiere of Jubilation! Dance for Orchestra by Brian Wilbur Grundstrom Performed by Queer Urban Orchestra on November 21 in Manhattan

The New York City Premiere of Jubilation! Dance for Orchestra by Brian Wilbur Grundstrom will be performed by the Queer Urban Orchestra, Seth Bedford, Artistic Director, on Sunday, November 21 – 3:00 PM at Church of the Holy Apostle, 296 Ninth Avenue at 28th Street in Manhattan. The composer will conduct his piece at this performance.

Jubilation! Dance for Orchestra was written in 2000 under the guidance of John David Earnest. It is about 9 minutes long and was given its World Premiere in 2006 by the George Washington University Orchestra in Washington, D.C. More about it at http://brianwilbur.com/html/compsOrchJubilation.html.

Other works on the program are Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4, Bernstein’s Overture to Candide and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8.

Brian Wilbur Grundstrom’s compositions for film, orchestra, piano, quintet and other ensembles demonstrate an innovative use of harmony and melody, which although firmly rooted in the tonal tradition is entirely new. Classically trained in piano as well as music theory from Gettysburg College, he has continued orchestration and composition studies with John David Earnest. His awards include Encore from American Composers Forum, ASCAPLUS from ASCAP and Composers Assistance Program from the American Music Center. He received three grants from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, an agency supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and was a finalist for the Mayor’s Arts Awards. Brian received a Peer Award for Sadie’s Waltz from Television, Internet, & Video Association of DC (TIVA-DC). The Bridge Club song from his Pepe! The Mail Order Monkey Musical was nominated for a 2009 OUTMusic Award.

His music has been performed by SONOS Chamber Orchestra, Shippensburg Festival Orchestra, Trinity Chamber Orchestra, George Washington University Orchestra, NIH Philharmonia, Holyoke Civic Symphony, Colla Voce and The New Jersey Gay Men’s Chorus. In November 2007, a full program of his music was presented at The Millennium Stage of The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

I’ve been commuting to NYC from Washington DC to rehearse the Queer Urban Orchestra, and it’s been wonderful working with the musicians in preparation for our upcoming concert. The Sunday November 21st 3pm concert will be the New York Premiere of my "Jubilation! Dance for Orchestra" as well as my conducting debut. I have to thank the orchestra for being so patient with my first time in front of an orchestra. The concert will be at the Church of the Holy Apostles on 9th Avenue and 28th Street.
